Manson joined the National Oceanic and Atmosphere Administration (NOAA) in a breaking-ground ceremony for the Pier Romeo Recapitalization project in North Charleston, South Carolina, in September 2024.
This critical project for the U.S. government involves demolishing a deteriorating pier at NOAA’s North Charleston facility and replacing it with a new floating pier. The upgraded structure will support NOAA’s climate research efforts and provide docking accommodations, along with shoreside power, for the agency’s two research vessels: RONALD H. BROWN and NANCY FOSTER.
Exploring shallow bays and the deepest parts of the ocean, NOAA performs vital oceanic research to support marine life, fisheries, navigation, and ocean wellness. “The Pier Romeo Replacement project is an outstanding project for Manson,” says Mark Openshaw, Vice President and Civil Area Manager for Gulf and East Coast operations. “It is a Design-Build project that gives us another opportunity to work with design consultant COWI and a great team of local Charleston subcontractors. We will design and build a state-of-the-art floating pier and associated facility for the world’s preeminent research organization for understanding and predicting changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts.”
